The Abu Bakr Al Siddiq Tunnel, which is the longest road tunnel in Saudi Arabia, was inaugurated on February 29, 2024. It spans 2,430 meters beneath the vast King Salman Park and is the first tunnel in Saudi Arabia to be equipped with a VID FIREKILL low-pressure water mist system. The tunnel provides three lanes in each direction along with an emergency lane, complete with modern traffic management and safety systems, including emergency services and evacuation routes. An additional 2,150-meter Al Oruba tunnel is currently being built, which will connect to the existing 840-meter tunnel on Abu Bakr Al-Siddiq Road, facilitating seamless vehicular movement and preventing congestion. These tunnels will also be equipped with a low-pressure water mist system.
The Abu Bakr Al Siddiq and Al Oruba Road Tunnels are a cornerstone of the Riyad City infrastructure plan to enhance traffic flow and alleviate congestion in Riyad, as well as the King Salman Park, designed by Saudi engineering firm Omrania and Danish architect firm Henning Larsen.
